Last month, I popped into Saddlehill in Voorhees, New Jersey, to catch a preview of a historical documentary the winery produced, "The Scribe, The Sword & The Shield," which traces the winery and vineyard property to Timothy Matlack Jr.—the patriot who handwrote the Declaration of Independence. If you’re curious about it, you can watch the full 17-minute film, here.
While watching, I chose to sip on a glass of Saddlehill’s Tapestry, a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Chardonnay. I had to run out immediately following the documentary, but fortunately, I snapped a photo of the bottle with my glass. I keep thinking about how I’d like to grab a bottle or two of this fresh, crisp white to sip on as summer starts to fade.
It’s really kind of all the things you want in a summer white. Citrusy, orchard fruits, a little herby, and then some pineapple takes over. It’s refreshing, a good solo sipper, and while I haven’t tried it with food, I’ve been making various grain, bean, and veggie salads all summer, and I think it would work with one. Or I can see it with the ultimate New Jersey simple summer light dinner - corn on the cob and a tomato sandwich on white bread. On the winery’s website, they suggest pairing it with an arugula salad or potato arancini from their onsite farmhouse kitchen.
Honestly, this summer has been extra hot and sticky, with way too many murder rain, flash floods, and extreme wind warnings blowing up my phone for my liking, but there are still several weeks left to go. I’m going to need wines like Tapestry to take me through the end of the season.
