A Rising Tide: A Pennsylvania wine tasting
One PA winery lifts up others at a walk around tasting
October was Pennsylvania wine month, and one of the state’s newer wineries, Pray Tell in Philadelphia, held a perfectly-sized walk-around tasting, calling it A Rising Tide. “A rising tide lifts all boats” is a term I frequently hear in the industry, but I don’t always see it played out. Pray Tell’s Tom Caruso and Sydney Adams actually did the work to truly lift other wineries in Philadelphia and the regions surrounding it by inviting a handful of them to pour at their urban winery in the Kensington neighborhood of the city.
Below you’ll find the wineries and photos of the wines they poured. I’m pointing you to which was my favorite from each winery, with some rather loose tasting notes—but that does not mean their other wines were not good.
(This is my first piece behind the paywall. Since I now have some subscribers, I think it’s only fair that I make their investment—which I truly appreciate—worth their while. I have included a free 7-day trial button for anyone who does want to read this piece in its entirety.)
Espumate from Casa Carmen in West Grove, PA. This Pét Nat is made with grapes from the winery’s own vineyards. I did not note which grapes, but this sparkling wine is unfiltered, fermented with native yeast, and hits just right for me as a Pet-Nat that’s a bit funky but not too funky and simply super pleasing.
